Summer Holiday - 2022

As I start writing these few words, I'm reminded of the 1963 song sung by Cliff Richard, entitled Summer Holiday, written by Brian Bennett and Bruce Welch. Here are the lyrics:

We're all goin' on a summer holiday
No more workin' for a week or two
Fun and laughter on a summer holiday
No more worries for me or you
For a week or two

We're goin' where the sun shines brightly
We're goin' where the sea is blue
We've seen it in the movies
Now let's see if it's true

Every wee body has a summer holiday
Doin' things they always wanted to
So we're goin' on a summer holiday
To make our dreams come true
For me and you

We're goin' where the sun shines brightly
We're goin' where the sea is blue
We've seen it in the movies
So let's see if it's true

Everybody has a summer holiday
Doin' things they always wanted to
So we're goin' on a summer holiday
To make our dreams come true
For me and you
It's a week or two
And a dream come true

My contract is ending on 30 June 2022, a few days after my 73rd birthday. I should have retired long ago and in fact had 2 years and 8 months out of work, largely because of the covid pandemic – how silly it was to lock-down the entire world whereby nothing was achieved at all except massive economic problems. However, that's another story.

The question that needs to be answered now is "What exactly am I going to do during my summer holiday?"

Of course, I'm not leading the life I'd like which would be to go long-term touring with Grace in our caravan – or even buy a home abroad in the sunshine. After seeing the state of the world and the ridiculous restrictions imposed on everyone during the covid pandemic it has made us realise just how screwed-up our lives can become due to our power mad leaders who want to control us and restrict our movements more now than during any time in world history. This means saying 'no' to buying a home in another country – better to keep on the move in our caravan when we get the chance. However, even that is made more difficult now the UK has left the EU (even though we are still part of Europe as a continent), as we are now limited to 90 days in the Schengen Zone out of any rolling 180-day period, so imposing even more restrictions on us folks who'd like to have a second home or to travel for extended periods.

Anyway, the fact is that I'm going to be on my own for my summer holiday as Grace has used all her holiday entitlement from her two jobs in visiting her family in the Philippines. I have been thinking of doing another bicycle tour, this time round the full length of the coast of Portugal, one of the few countries that have been sensible enough to get rid of all covid travel restrictions. This 600-mile trip would be a wonderful experience but there are two factors that are stopping me from booking my 'plane ticket to get there.

These are:

1)         I would much rather share the experience with Grace or JP but they aren't interested even if they had the time (JP has the time but no inclination!).

2)         I don't want to leave Kanga all alone in our house all day whilst Grace is at work and JP is flat-out in bed.

The other option would be to go on a bicycle tour with Kanga but her walking alongside me on my bicycle isn't an option for her at 11 years old – and getting her to Portugal on the 'plane might prove difficult too.

Taking Kanga with me is really the only option I have so this means no bicycle tour. It also means that I have to buy another vehicle as my current vehicle is on its last wheels (it doesn't have legs!).

Once I've bought another vehicle (and I've been looking for several months without success), I need to decide where to go on my summer holiday. I could have as long as three months from July to September, or longer if the weather holds good.

I have two choices – stay in the UK or head for Ireland or mainland Europe.

Factor in that I now have Osteoarthritis (as does Kanga) which severely limits the time I can spend driving to about one hour continuously, and therefore the distance I can drive in a day. No more drives of 800 miles in one day for me now.

So, where to go?

I'll let you know when I'm on my way.

Of course, this is IF I ever get on my way. One of the problems I'm facing is the "Can't be bothered" attitude which I assume is brought on by old age, as is feeling tired and lacking in energy for much of the time. Also, I really don't like going it alone. Depression? Maybe. Let's hope I can get a grip on myself and do something positive for my summer holiday.
